The old ( Medieval ) town of Rhodes is located in the heart of the new town. The famous order of the knights of St. John of Jerusalem has left an indelible mark on the island.
The knights arrived on Rhodes at 1309 and established them self in the byzantine city, which was built around the ancient Acropolis. With the arrival of the knights, Rhodes quickly became the great centre of their Kingdom.
After 2 centuries, in 1522, a treaty with Suleiman the Magnificent after a six months siege, marked the departure of the knights from the island. Some of the monuments you can see today is the Palace of the Grand Master of the order ( Kastello ). The street of the knights ( Ippoton street on maps ) is one of the best preserved and most delightful medieval relics in the world.
The Knight’s hospital, a unique Gothic masterpiece now houses the Archaeological museum . The old town of Rhodes, is one of the few places in the world, that when you walking on the empty streets late at night, it takes you back in Time!
